Visit to the Matildic Castles

Lived between the 11th and 12th centuries, a period characterised by continuous battles, intrigues and excommunications, the Grancontessa Matilde di Canossa is one of the most important and interesting figures of the Italian Middle Ages: she was able to demonstrate extraordinary strength, enduring even great pain and humiliation, showing an innate aptitude for leadership.

The Borgo Vercallo Relais stands in her lands, still rich in her past and history thanks to the mighty fortified system of castles that defended the vast feudal state she governed.

In fact, a few kilometres from the Relais you can visit some of its most important castles.

Trekking on horseback

With the aim of enhancing equestrian tourism through the rediscovery of environmental protection, Relais Borgo Vercallo is the starting point for numerous excursions in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines.

Specialised in organising horse trekking for many years, the Relais provides guests with guides and, for those without, trained horses for mountain excursions.

There are numerous trails that can be hiked from Vercallo, ranging from those that can be done in one day to those divided into several stages and days. In fact, part of the famous Via del Volto Santo, which starts in Mantua and goes all the way to Lucca, can be walked from here.

To organise your trek you can write directly to info@borgovercallo.com or call +39 348 2653970 – Vittorio.
